How can I stop MS Word from adding an extra period?

Whenever I type a double space after a period, MS Word automatically changes the period to two periods.  Why?

I realize it might be the convention now to have just one space instead of two after a period, but it is an ingrained habit of mine to type two spaces after every period and it's very annoying to have to go back and delete the extra period after every sentence.  How can I get it to stop?  Is there a setting I can change somewhere?

Thank you.

    Hi Meagan,

    I guess this is settings inside your Mac. Please follow the steps below to check the outcome:

    1. Go to System Preferences on your Mac;
    2. Select Keyboard and switch to Text tab as the following picture shows:
    3. Clear the option: Add period with double-space and check it again in Word.

    Regards,

    William

    And I can help you u-ingrain yourself from having to type two spaces.

    1. Open Word
    2. Go to Word Menu → Preferences → Spelling & Grammar
    3. Click button beside writing style choose "Grammar & More"
    4. Click Settings
    5. Look for "Space between Sentences"
    6. Click the button and choose "two spaces between Sentences."

    When set, once you type a period at end of a sentence it will jump two spaces.

    Now I have no idea what will happen in cases like Mr., Mrs., Ph.D., M.D.  and so on. But for those that follow the rules of the type popular in the 50 (not to be insulting there are lot Colleges still require it and legal community, too), this will allow it without thinking about it.
