Office 365 Word high CPU usage all the time

Hello,

We use Office 365 in our company and since the last update of Office, we meet high CPU usage all the time when we use Word. When I look for this on the net, I find that you already correct something like that on MacOS.

Here, I only open the document :

If I open the option tab, the CPU fall :

If I reduce Word in the task bar, it the same as opening options panel, the CPU fall.

The CPU is always high (between 30% to 100%), only on opening and viewing documents. It's difficult to work with Word and if the document is big it's awfull.

I try to disable all the spell check, without any change.

Thanks,

Best regards

I may have find the bug. I have disable automatic spell checker, but, when I scroll the page, Word still to check proofing langage. Even if I disable this option, Word always check the text when I scroll.

In the follow screenshot, I don't do anything other than scrolling the document, Word still checking the text !!

After upgrading my graphics drivers and updating Office to the last version, it's a little better.

I try the differents options of disabling the Hardware Acceleration AND Animation settings in word but disabling the hardware acceleration make Word working between 80 and 100% of CPU, freezing a little my computer.

Now, when Word is show in the screen, and get the focus, the CPU work between arround 30% for 30 seconds. If I don't do anything, the CPU fall. But if I keep working (moving pages, writing,...) the CPU stay arround 30%. Less than before.

If I move to quickly the pages, sometimes, Word become all blank and freeze.

After some time,s keeping my document open (arround 5 minutes or more), Word comes to work correctly (?!), (automatic spell checker is disabled in my options) and stay arround 5-15% of CPU. It may be a eggster of the microsoft developpers team, when you want to work with Word, open your doc and go take a coffee before work...

I have a Windows 10 Pro 64b on a Toshiba satellite Pro with a core i5-6200 with 8Gb of Ram.

Windows and Office are in French langage.

I don't get any problems with Excel or PowerPoint or other Office apps

I have notice this problem since arround 1-2 month (holidays...), one of my collegue show me the same problem on his computer 1 month ago.

    Hi David,

Based on your screenshot, the version of Office is not the newest version.

I suggest you try the following steps to update Office:

    1. Open Word.
    2. Click File>select Account>click Update Options>Update now.

If the issue still exists, could you please provide the following information?

    1. Check if the issue occurs when you open a new document.
    2. Confirm if the issue occurs on other Office programs, such as Excel.
    3. The OS version.
    4. When did the issue occur? What did you set before the issue occur, such as updating Office?

    Thanks,

    Qing

This forum is a place to look for solutions to problems like this (although we probably won't be able to help with this specific issue).  The UserVoice forums are now the place to post "bug reports" (which this is) and "new feature requests"/suggestions.

First thing to do is cross post this to the Word UserVoice forum.  The "How to" instructions are in this link:

Uservoice- How do I give feedback on Microsoft Office Applications? 2016 and earlier – Win / Mac / Ios / Android

Copy your above posting to usrvoice AND include the hyperlink to this question.  Also post a link to your uservoice submission back here so that anyone with a similar issue can vote for it and add their comments.

What you describe sounds like a video issue. If it only happens in Word, no other applciations, then it is most likely an issue in how Word generates the video display commands.  There is nothing we can do to affect that other than bring it to MS's attention. There have been a large number miscellaneous video issues with Word, Excel and PowerPoint 2016.

There are a couple of long shot things you can try.

    1. Unplug and replug BOTH ends of your video cable. Maybe it is not properly seated.
    2. If you can get one, try a different video cable
    3. restart the computer (although I assume you probably/hopefully already done this as part of normal daily routine).
    4. Do a manual Update of Office (I see that you are running the current version, but they may have released a small update since then
    5. Trigger Windows Update manually, just to make sure it is up to date
    6. Change current Hardware Acceleration setting in Word (see instructions below)
    7. Change combination of Hardware Acceleration AND Animation settings in Word
    8. Start Word in Safe Mode
    9. Restart Windows in Safe mode, start Word normally
    10. with Win still in safe mode, close word, start it in safe mode

When you try to open an Office 2016 or Office 2013 application, such as Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote or Access, one of the following errors may be displayed, depending on the installation type of Office.

    Video Driver

Although I didn't suggest it ealier, you could also check to see that you are running the most current version of the Video driver. If you are running a 3rd party video card, you could also try asking the question at their web site to see if anyone else has reported similar issues.
