Excel Online Spreadsheet in SharePoint slow when editing in Excel

I have some large Excel files on SharePoint that edit just fine in the browser, but when they are opened up in Excel every edit takes about 5 minutes to process. There is a "Links DisabledLinks to external workbooks are not supported and have been disabled." Message on the top if that has anything to do with it.

Thank you for any help you can provide.

Hi David,

Thanks for your clarification.

So, the issue is for some large worksheets, when edit them in Excel desktop application, it will take near 5 minutes to response your editing operation.

You may try the following options:

Option 1.Download the file and then re-upload a copy of it to the library. Check if the re-uploaded file have the same issue.

Option 2.Check with other users in your tenant. Do they run into the same issue when editing the same file in Excel. Check if the issue is only related to your account.

Option 3. Upload the copy file to another library. Check if the issue is related to specific SharePoint Online library.

Meanwhile, could you share with us some sample files in the library? I have sent you a private messageto collect them. We want to test with the same file from our side.

Moreover, please open Excel>click File>Account>capture a screenshot of all info under Product Information.

Regards,

Tim

    1. Yes, the file(s) in question are stored in our Business' Office 365 SharePoint space.
    2. Some of the other worksheet have this issue, it only has been reported on the larger ones though.
    3. No, it is only problematic when edited in Excel. It works fine when edited in the browser, but if I want to 'edit in excel' any edit (an entry into a cell for example) takes about 5 minutes before it responds again (to say, enter more data). This only happens to large files opened in Excel through SharePoint.
    4. No, that notification is always there. I said "if that has anything to do with it" because I don't think it has anything to do with this issue, but I thought I would mention it. It does not seem to have any effect on editing and saving.

    Thank you for your help.

    Hi David,

To better understand the situation, I'd like to confirm the following things:

    1. Is this worksheet stored in your tenant? Or you are external user outside of the tenant which has this worksheet?
    2. Do other worksheets stored in the same location have this issue?
    3. Do you mean when you edit the file in Excel, it works fine, but when you want to open it in Excel desktop application, it takes 5 minutes to open the file?
    4. Capture a screenshot of the highlighted message. By "if that has anything to do with it", do you mean after using 5 minutes to open the file, when you want to start editing, you will get this notification? Can you edit and save to the original file with this notification?

    Best regards,

    Tim
