Highlighting a blank space in Word 2016

How do I highlight a blank space?  I am selecting the space I want to highlight and clicking on the yellow highlighter button but nothing is happening. What is strange is that it worked just fine the other day. Now it will highlight text but not a space. I want to be able to do this to proofread and give feedback. Any help is appreciated.

    You can apply Highlighting to a space character only if one or more visible text characters before and after is included:

    If you want to apply yellow (or some other color) to a blank space character only, you will have to make use of text shading instead. Use the ![](https://learn-attachment.microsoft.com/api/attachments/4b39b876-8c25-4f8b-8b55-258430858c30?platform=QnA) button in the Paragraph group on the Home tab:

    In the above examples I have displayed nonprinting marks so that spaces are represented by dots.
