Hyperlinks between two .docx files

I have had to split a .docx file into two so that I can email it. According to Help, I should be able to link the two, from a bookmark in one to a bookmark in another.

I have no problem targeting a bookmark in the same file, but I can't see how to target a bookmark in the other file; I can't see how to target anything more specific than the file itself. That's as close as the 'Insert hyperlink' procedure allows.

Someone please tell me it can be done and how . . .

    Hi Oriolegd,

If the original part and separate part are two individual documents and you want to hyperlink from one of them to another one's bookmark, based on my test, there is no out-of-box solutions in Word 2016 for Mac. However, in Word for Windows, when we click Link>Existing File or Web Page>select another document>we can click Bookmark button to select the bookmark in another document. In Word 2016 for Mac there is no similar button to see all bookmarks in another document.

You may follow up this thread to see if our community members have some suggestions for your requirement with Word for Mac.

    Tim

    Hi Oriolegd,

For the original part and separate part, are they two individual documents? Do you want to hyperlink text from document A with a bookmark in document B?

    Regards,

    Tim

As I have already partly explained, I originally had a single .docx document within which I had started using hyperlinks to link subjects to associated information located elsewhere in the document.

I did this by bookmarking a key word in the subject and a corresponding key word in the associated information, then hyperlink each to the other.

I was able to do this for the links within the original part of the document. I look for the target bookmark amongst the Bookmarks in 'This document', click on it and OK it.

I then tried to continue with the associated information within the separated part of the original document (in fact, the following screen shot is of the separated part of the document):

The only bookmark in 'this document' is the subject bookmark I've just entered. But if I look amongst 'Web page or File', I get as far as the original part of the document, but with no option of accessing any target bookmarks within it. 'Select' simply allows me to choose which of the two separated parts of the original document I wish to examine:

There are in fact many bookmarks there; ie:

I'm unable to relate your example to mine. You seem to have a system with more options than mine.

    Hi Oriolegd,

About how to link two documents, let's say there are document 1 and document 2. In the bottom of document 1 has text "To document 2". Select it>right-click> click Hyperlink>under Web Page or file>click Select>choose Document 2 from the location where you save it> click OK. Now click the this hyper link will open Document 2. Note, if the path is local path on your computer, after you email the document, another user may be not able to use this hyperlink.

So, is the word document too large and you have to split it to two documents? Could you let me know the purpose why you want to link them? Based on my understanding, is it possible to just rename them as Document Part 1 and Document Part 2?

    Best regards,

    Tim
