Phonetic Guide for Japanese does not display Ruby Text

Hello,

I have been scouring the internet for a solution to this problem but cannot seem to find one that works for a Mac user. I am unable to add Japanese furigana to my kanji through the phonetic guide function as it does not display the Ruby Text (Figure 1).

I have checked for Microsoft Word updates and had found none (Figure 2). I found an alternative solution that suggested I "click-to-run" an older version of MS word that may include the Ruby Text functioning properly but only in ways that instructed on how to do so for Windows Users. Regardless, it still feels rather unsatisfactory that I will have to 'degrade' to get an 'upgrade' of my phonetic text function which should be working properly. I've cross-checked with friends to see if their Phonetic Guide displayed Ruby Text and they were, without additional hassle.

A suggested solution was to change Language Preferences to East Asian Language, but I am unsure of where to find this function? It's not within Word > Preferences (Figure 3).

Figure 2: No updates

Figure 3: No Language preferences?

Figure 4: My Microsoft About if it helps

I seek urgent assistance as this is for an assignment at school! Hopefully a kind soul would be ble to provide me with some easy-to-follow answer as I am not entirely tech-savvy.  Thanks in advance everyone!

Cheers,

Frosch Quek

Hi Frosch,

Please check if you set English-US as primary in Language and Region in Mac Preference. If no first set it and then restart the Mac. After doing that, you should see the East Asian Languages option in Word Preference. Then you need to select Japanese as the language and open a new document to see the outcome.

Thanks,

Cliff
