ODBC Driver Missing for Access .accdb after Office 365 Installation

I have Access databases that I've created ODBC connections to and are functioning fine. Host OS is 64bit, I'm running on both Win 7 and Win 10. Access has always been 32 bit but since we moved to Office 365 installation I can no longer create or modify ODBC connections to any .accdb databases, although the Access databases still work fine . I get a failure telling me that I have both 32 and 64 bit versions of Microsoft Office tools installed, which I don't. I did reinstall everything on a fresh VM to check with the same result. The only other program that I have installed is SSMS 2017 that I use for SQL databases. Original DSN connections were created using SysWOW64\odbcad32.exe. Manual installation of Microsoft Access 32 bit Drivers fails with message "both 32 and 64 bit Office applications exist".

    Hi Dave,

Could you take a look at this support article and see if it solves your problem?

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2874601/can-t-use-the-access-odbc-driver-or-oledb-provider-outside-office-clic

Since you're using the ODBC connection outside of Office, take note of the section towards the end of the article that discusses installing the database engine redistributable in quiet mode.

Please let me know if that solves your problem, thanks!

    Mike (Access Team)

    Tisky,

    I did without success.

Then I took it a step further with a complete OS re-installation prior to installing Office 365 - same result.

I have found many other posts here and on external forums about folks who have installed Office365 and are experiencing similar OBDC issues. Would lead me to believe that Office365 is probably a bad choice for anyone who requires ODBC connectivity.

To elaborate on my re-installation and results:

    1. Install clean 64bit OS
    2. Install 32bit Office365
    3. Attempt to use SysWow64\odbcad32.exe to create or modify a SYSTEM or USER DSN .. FAILS stating driver missing (no .accdb drivers are listed)
    4. Attempt to install the 32bit Microsoft Database Engine Redistributable .. FAILS stating both 32 and 64bit Office applications exist (can't understand this as the only software on the system was created via Microsoft installation routines for the OS and Office365)

I have 2 Access ODBC instances that are currently inoperable that are used extensively within our facility, one that contains a lot of VB that would be a major effort to recreate in a different application.

What else can I do to resolve this?

    Hi DJS_42,

To move forward, we'd like to collect more information:

    1. The detailed steps of how you connect the ODBC driver and Access database.
    2. The screenshot of Access version, you can check it in File > Account.

    1. We'll send the ROIScan via Private Message, you can run it to check the compatibility between 64-bit and 32-bit.

    Regards,

    Tisky

    Hi DJS_42,

Based on your description, the ODBC driver cannot connected to Access database after you installed Office 365. We suggest you completely uninstall both of your original Access and Office 365, to completely uninstall Office 365, you can follow the steps in this Uninstall Office from a PC.

Meanwhile, since Office 365 subscription includes Access, you don't need to install the original Access.

    Regards,

    Tisky
