Lasso Select cannot be deselected

Using OneNote 2016 desktop, Surface Book, Windows 10, Surface pen, all brand new 'out of the box'

I write on the screen; I tap Lasso Select under Draw and successfully lasso the handwriting; I tap Ink to Text and it successfully converts the handwriting to text; all great.

But then if I want to do more handwriting on screen, it attempts to Lasso select again rather than ink. I can select 'Type' on the ribbon, but as soon as the pen tip gets close to the screen it jumps to Lasso Select again.

How do I stop Lasso Select mode and go back to inking?

OK, I'm up to date now but the Creator Update has not happened yet, so perhaps that might fix it.

In the meantime I've tried unpairing and re-pairing the pen, with no effect. But then I discovered that if I use the 'right click' button on the pen to engage Lasso mode, rather than the ribbon, the problem does not occur. So I'll have to get into the habit of using that method for selecting instead of the ribbon.

Thanks Rolando, but that's not worked. All the pen options were checked, originally. I have tried unchecking the 3 you mention above, one at a time, then in pairs, then all three, but this has not solved the problem.

    Here is the sequence:

Open Onenote 2016 on a note. Select the Draw ribbon. On the ribbon, 'Type' is selected, 'Lasso Select' is not selected.

Approach the screen with the pen. When it's about 5mm from the screen, 'Type' automatically deselects (I guess this is 'Automatically switch between inking...' working). Write some handwriting on the screen. Tap Lasso Select on the ribbon. It is selected. Use the pen, and it's working in Lasso mode.

Tap Lasso Select again on the ribbon. It becomes deselected, and 'Type' becomes automatically selected.

Approach the screen with the pen. At about 5mm from the screen 'Type' automatically deselects again but Lasso Select automatically selects. I cannot find how to stop this automatic selection of Lasso Select when the pen approaches the screen, once it has been used.

I have tried the other, non-Office, version of OneNote as well and the same thing happens - once Lasso Select has been selected, you cannot go back to the state where neither Type nor Lasso Select are selected.

    Hi Jonathan,

It is possible that the settings under Pen is causing Lasso Select to activate automatically. We suggest making the following changes in the Pen settings and check if it resolves your concern:

    1. Click Advanced under OneNote Options.
    2. Under Pen, make changes on the options listed below and check the results:
    • Disable the scratch-out gesture while inking.
    • Check Use pen pressure sensitivity.
    • Automatically switch between inking, selecting, typing, and panning.

Let us know the results for us to assist you further.

    Regards.

We tried to replicate the issue on our end and we were unable to reproduce the same results. For now, we suggest that you update Office and check if the issue persists.

    Your response is highly appreciated.
