I would like to compare two files, but the two files are greyed out. I reinstalled several times, but it didn't work.   I created a new Mac user, the compare option worked well. Anyone has a solution?

Your screen shot doesn't include the entire dialog window, so I can't be sure, but the most likely issue is that the Enable field at the bottom of the Open dialog has defaulted to Word Templates. Change that to Word Documents & your files should suddenly come to life.

    Thank you.

The version of Office 2016 is 15.27.

The  version of The Mac OS is 10.12.6.

    Thank you.

One is .doc and the other is .docx.

It works when I compare the same two files under a new user id.

More information is needed to answer your question.

    What version of Office 2016 do you have? Version, 15.37? 15. 38? 15.39?  16.6?

What version of The Mac OS  do you have? Mac OS 11? MacOS 11? Mac OS 12? Mac OS 13?

If you are a Microsoft Insider user and Using  (some people myself included) have volunteered to try Version 16 of Office, some features are actually turned off. The reason is the feature is not yet perfected enough to be added.  If you are using 16.6 you need to move your question to the Mac Insider  Forum.

If you are still using 15 series come back to this thread and version numbers of Office and MacOS.

What are the file formats of the documents you are trying to compare?

When you tested under a new user id, did you use the same two files?
