In my word document (Word for Mac 2011; ver 14.1.4) there is a floating grey box that says "Chart Area." There is no chart here--it seems to be left over from something in excel (which is not open) or a previous word document. If I close word, the box sometimes disappears, but it sometimes reappears. Note that the box stays stationary on the screen; as I scroll through the document the box does not move on the screen. Thanks for your help!

I have the same problem. And I wonder why you are pointing to a seemingly completely unrelated article ...
I note that Ms people always end up by recommending to uninstall/reinstall stupid Office. This never corrects any issue and is a complete loss of time. I tried it a few times, and concluded that it is not worth the effort, particularly considering that the stupid Office 2011 for Mac is not provided with an Uninstall command, you have to manually dig through many hidden folders to remove all the installation files. What a mess.
See below what it looks like. This happens with any Word document as soon as I insert more than a few charts copied from Excel (linked data). I'd say that it comes up after the 4th or 5th chart.
There have been many updates since version 14.1.4 was released. You should update.
The first thing to do is install the recent updates. Make sure your Mac has a working internet connection, then:
Update Mac OS X. Open the App store and click on the Updates button. Install the updates.
After, in any Office application go to the Help menu and choose Check for Updates to launch the AutoUpdate app. Let AutoUpdate install updates and then restart your Mac.
AFTER your updates are installed test again. If the problem remains, start a new question, as this one pertains only to the 14.1.14 update. To find your current update level, go to the Word menu and choose About Word. Be sure to mention the version you are experiencing the problem with when you post your question.
Try to restart the system once and check if it helps.
Also mention if the problem affects a single Word document, or does it affect all Word documents?
If it affects all the Word files and / or, if it happens even if you try to open a blank document, try removing the preferences associated with Word 2011 and check if it helps. Steps 1 and 2, in the following article would help you do so:
