I have Office 2016 through work and am unable to use the Black theme.  I only have Colorful and Dark Grey.  I've updated Office, with no luck.  Frustrating as my coworkers have access to it, but I do not.  Please help.

Office Version: 16.0.7070.2028

Office themes can also be set through a registry key, so that may be something else to try. I was also missing the Black theme and was able to set it through the key.

    1. Search for the Run app (or press Windows + R) to open a Run window.
    2. Type "regedit.exe" in the search bar and press "OK" to open the Registry Editor.
    3. Navigate to "Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Common". Here you'll find Office registry keys for settings used across the Office suite.
    4. Double-click on "UI Theme" and change the "Value data" to 4, the Black theme equivalent (3 is Dark Grey, 4 is Black, 5 is White, and I believe any other value will default to Colorful).
    5. Restart any running Office apps to see the updated theme.

If you go back into File->Options in an Office product and check the theme you've set, it may appear blank. You should be able to set it to any themes you were able to see previously but any hidden theme will still not be in the list.

    Hope this helps!

    Hi Linda

Why is that black theme only available with office 365 subscription?

I paid for office, but i am not allowed to use black theme because i don't have the subscription.

    What the ****?? It's only a theme.

I used to defend Microsoft when people ridicule it and suggest to get other computer. Now i feel stupid.

I have the same issue. Microsoft employees never seem to know how to fix these issues and regularly give out bad advice/instruction. Guy above had to reinstall all office apps after bad advice.

But lets all start new threads so that it doesn't appear like this is happening to more than one person ! wink

Didn't work, I went to repair the apps and it just deleted all of my MS Office apps off my computer.  Had to reinstall.  No solution.

    Hi Pdf5,

To use the Black theme, please make sure you installed your Office 2016 applications with your Office 365 subscription, and have it up to date.

Meanwhile, you can do an Online Repair for your Office applications, and check the outcome. Open Control Panel > Programs and Features, select Office application and click Change > Online Repair > Repair.

    Regards,

    Jiaxing Bian
