The official word from Microsoft is that, with an update rolled out on January 10, 2018, Microsoft Equation 3.0 has been deprecated in all versions of Word back to Word 2007. For more information, see https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4057882/error-when-editing-an-equation-in-office.

The link you provide offers a free trial of MathType (see also http://www.dessci.com/en/products/mathtype/default.htm). If you don't choose to buy it, it degrades into MathType Lite, which is the equivalent of the old Microsoft Equation 3.0 and will permit you to edit the old Equation 3.0 equations.

MICROSOFT HAS MONETIZED THE SECURITY PROBLEM WITH A PREVIOUSLY USED THIRD-PARTY EQUATION VENDOR --- BY ALLOWING EDIT TO EQUATIONS VIA A FEE -- WELCOME TO THE NEW WORLD OF GREED AND GEEKNESS - HOPE YOU LIKE IT.

Important: Equation Editor 3.0 objects will still display normally if you have MT Extra font installed (if you don't have the font, you can download it). However, users can edit these equations only by downloading the MathType software tools provided by WIRIS. See MathType desktop for Equation Editor users.
