What does this mean and how do I fix it?

Microsoft Visual Basic

Run-Time error '5':

Invalid procedure call or argument

It started this morning with excel files with macros

I have spent the entire day trying to get someone at Microsoft support.  At the end someone told me that I have to pay for support to get this fixed.  This is Office for Mac that I just purchased last Friday.

Extremely frustrated and pissed off.  I need to get back to work and not chase MS support.

PLEASE HELP!

    Hi,

I have Office 2016 for Mac.

After I upgraded to OS X High Sierra, I updated Office as well. I'm now facing the below message every time I launch Excel. (I'm not even opening a specific workbook, just opening Excel)

    Run-time error '5':

    Invalid procedure call or argument

The Debug button is grayed out (as is the Continue button), and the only way I'm able to start my work is to hit the End button.

I've disabled all add-ins, ensured all available updates have been applied, and I'm still facing the same problem. Would appreciate any suggestions on how to fix it.

    Vikram

Because Apple imposed "sandboxing" requirements on Microsoft Office some commands no longer work. The error message "

Invalid procedure call or argument (Error 5)" is pretty general. If you would troubleshoot the code and copy the code which is generating the error and paste that code here we might be able to explain why it works in 2011 but not 2016 and what could be done to make the code work, or why your code will never work in 2016.

That means that a macro in the file you are trying to open is making an invalid call. did the file work before "this morning"? If so, what changed?

Yes it was working.  I have never had a problem with this on my 2011 Office and didn't have the problem since Friday of last week when I upgraded to Office 2016.  I spent 10 hours trying to get support from Microsoft.  It was HELL!!!

At the end they told me that I have to pay $499 for advanced support.  That basically did it for me.

I am still having the problem on 2016 but not 2011.  Microsoft support has been worthless on this.
