Times New Roman appearing as Cambria and Arial

For about a year or so, since one of the Word updates, Times New Roman has not been an option on the font drop down bar. Why Word would get rid of the most commonly used traditional font is beyond me, but I opted to use regular Times instead.

I recently updated Word again and the default font for all of my Word documents is now Times New Roman, according to the font drop down bar; however, Times New Roman is still not an option on the drop down bar and it was appearing visually as Cambria. I just updated my computer (one of the MacOS High Sierra updates) and now it still says Times New Roman but it appears as Arial.

Can someone explain this nonsense to me? Can I just use Times New Roman? Why is it saying it's Times New Roman when it's clearly Cambria or Arial? Nothing makes sense.

I currently have Word version 16.9.1 for Mac.

Several solutions have worked for different users:

  1. Launching Font Book to resolve duplicates and validate your fonts.
  2. Launching Font Book and make sure TNR is not disabled.
  3. Copying Library > Fonts to YourHomeFolder > Library > Fonts.
  4. Updating Word (depending on version).
  5. Running Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility to repair permissions (depending on OS version).
