Besides the Insert > Shapes command that Charles mentioned, in Word 2016 you should have a Draw tab on the ribbon:

This lets you draw on the document with a drawing pad, touchpad, or mouse.

If that tab isn't visible, first look in the File > Options > Customize Ribbon dialog. If the Draw tab is listed on the right side but doesn't have a check mark next to it, click to check it. If the Draw tab doesn't appear in the list, make sure you have updated Office to the most current build (go to File > Account > Update Options and click Update Now).

Wrong. If you actually look and see I am referring to the online 365 version to which there are no options under insert for shapes or otherwise drawing.  Using your logic Then please explain the rational for having the tools on the desktop version and also on the 365 version(Online) for excel. The drawing feature is not to make portraits ,landscapes or works of art ( though you can make rudimentary ones with the full version on the desktop) the tools are used in order to enhance graphic, table and charts, etc  in the document itself. It also allows great flexibility in content layout.

Thanks  (Micosoft 365 is the Online version) .... is what I figured... it just doesn't make any logical sense, in Excel online version the drawing tools are added just as they are on the desktop. The issue is that since the primary system we use are OSX, it becomes problematic when Microsoft no longer has a full office suit for Mac's for the current version of office so, we are relegated on those machines to run 365 which is only online version.

    1. Word is a word processor. It is not a drawing program and any drawing features are an afterthought.
    2. There are very good drawing programs out there, designed with graphic design in mind.
    3. Powerpoint has powerful drawing features, although those, too, are not up to a true drawing program standard.
    4. Visio has even more.

That said, go to your Insert tab  and insert a shape.

That opens up the drawing tools formatting tab.

You have to be actually using a drawing to access that tab.
