I just got a new MAC with Word installed, and I discovered I no longer have a small icon at the bottom-right corner of the Footnote Group on the References tab of the ribbon. As a result, I can't seem to locate a way to change endnotes from Roman numerals to Arabic numbers.  I've googled endlessly for the answer, and all the advice is to click on that small icon (as I used to do on my old computer).  But the small icon is not there!Help!

By way of explanation: The "small icon" you are looking for is called a dialog launcher, but it is available only in Windows versions of the Office programs. They are needed because the Windows programs have done away with Menus. Dialog launchers never have been used in any release of Mac Office because the Main Menu Bar still is used.

To change the formatting of the endnotes, go to Insert> Footnote in the Main Menu Bar as indicated in the screen shot provided by Neo Wu [odd as it may seem]. Both footnotes & endnotes are managed in that dialog window depending on which option you select when you get there. To finish, be sure to click Apply rather than Insert.

    Hi John,

I'd like to suggest you follow the screenshot above to modify your endnotes, please have a try.

Besides, I can't see your screenshot, please insert it again if you need.

    Thanks,

    Neo

Your screen shot did not display - probably because you attempted to paste it directly into the message. This Community does not support that. Graphics myst be inserted using the Insert Image tool on the message window toolbar.

However, I don't believe a screen shot is necessary... It sounds like you are looking on the Insert tab of the Ribbon. You need to click Insert in the Main Menu Bar at the very top of the display screen which starts with the Apple Logo  followed by the words Word, File, Edit, etc.

    Hi John,

To achieve your goal that change endnote number type, I'd like to suggest you click Footnote on the Insert menu to open the Footnote and Endnote box. Then change number type. Please have a try and share with me your result.

For your reference: Add footnotes and endnotes in Word 2016 for Mac.

If it is not your scenario, please share with me more info as below:

    1. The version number of your OS(Apple menu>About this Mac) and Office(Word>About Microsoft Word).
    2. Screenshot of the feature icon on your old Mac. (If you can find any.)

    Thanks,

    Neo
