Word 2016 - Center Across Selection in Table

To meet 508/accessible requirements, we cannot merge cells to center text across a selection in a table.  In previous Word versions you could select the cells, right-click to select Table Cell properties and use the alignment to select "Center Across Selection" (Similar to Excel 2016).  This is no longer available in the Word 2016 version.  Creating the table in Excel and cutting and pasting a table which has been "centered across a selection" causes formatting errors in Word.  Is there a work around for this function in Word 2016?

Center Across Selection has never been available in Word, as far as I can remember. I just tested Office 2010 and the option is in the Format Cells dialog box in Excel, not in Word.

In which version of Word have you seen this command?
