I right click on the tab 'Sheet 1' at the bottom left then click 'insert'. The only templates I have the option of inserting are the ones that come with the software. I need to be able to import one that I have created myself. How do I do this?

Open your Excel > File > Options > Save > Your see Default Personal templates location > If this is blank, put a folder path here and place all your personal templates in this folder path.
When you open your Excel > File > New > You will have Personal /Shared categories also where your templates will reflect.

I have followed the instructions provided. The templates are accessible via Excel > File > New > however they are not appearing when I try to insert via right clicking the tab within a workbook.
Do like this -
In a worksheet, right click > Insert to display these templates > Right click on any template > Properties > Now, you will get the path where these templates are stored > Copy you personal template in this path.
Now, you will see these templates when try to insert through right click > Insert
