Why is it so complicated to save a word or excel document?

My goal is to save the document to the memory I paid for in the computer only.  can I set up my preferences somewhere so that I don't have to choose every time?  It would save me frustration if then I wanted to add it to the cloud or a thumb drive I know Id have to take another step.

Is there a way to eliminate the one drive and save everything on the memory of the computer as things were before?

Why do I need to be signed into Microsoft on my computer before I can save my documents?

What is Microsoft snooping? selling?

Thanks for the update.

If you are prompted to use the Save As feature after using the hotkeys Ctrl + S. It is most likely that the file is not yet saved locally on your computer. E.g. You open an Excel spreadsheet that is attached on an email. Excel preloads the file letting you edit it now and decide where to save it later. If the file is already saved locally and you edit it, pressing Ctrl + S will save your file without having the hassle to go to File then Save.

In regard with signing in using with your Microsoft Account in Office. Normally you don't need to be signed in just to save your files locally. By signing in with your Microsoft Account, you can connect your Office applications to other Microsoft services such as Office Online, OneDrive, Skype, etc.

It was not meant as chastisement. It was meant as education. I thought I understood what you meant, but I might not have. Using the correct words for things is always important, but it's especially so when asking questions. If you use the wrong word, you are liable to be misunderstand and therefore get wrong answers.

If you can't save to the hard drive if not signed in, I assume that that's the reason. But I've never tried to do what you're doing, so I can't be sure that's correct. Sorry. Perhaps someone else knows the answer.

Thank you for the Chastisement so I used the wrong word? Great, I think you can help me with the question as you pointed out I'm not savvy with the words attached to this computer but who cares I just want to use it.

I'm interested in saving word and excel documents without having to be connected to an account or the internet.  All of the other computers I owned were configured to save on the installed "storage" as a first resort.  This computer will not save on  anything except a thumb drive (flash stick?) unless I'm longed on to the computer, even if I don't try to save to the cloud.

So here is what happens  when I am logged on:

if I push the save button it goes to one drive automatically

if I go to "save as"  I get these options:

      one drive

    this PC

    add place

    browse

Naturally I though if I used "this PC" it  as the place to save my work would be resident on the storage of the computer and I wouldn't need to sign.   wrong assumption.

So if you recall how word worked in the past you saved the document and you could put them in files or just saved them.  they were accessible by going to documents or by opening Word that then took you to a window.  My goal is to get back to that.

    Can you help?

Thank you the original questions are not exactly addressed

One,this doesn't address the "on line & signed in" issue. Ctrl F12 does nothing and Ctrl S  goes to "save as" the first time and saves after that - and this  just gets me to the "save as" or save with out using the touch pad. It does not eliminate the first 2 requirements which are to in order to save I have to over ride the default search out the file and location  I want or it automatically goes to the cloud and 2 I still must be signed in and online.

So Once I'm at save it's still a problem.

    You can't save to memory.

The term "memory" is used to refer to the place where the computer holds the program and data it is working with at the moment. It's normally random access memory (RAM), but that can be extended with the page or swap file on the hard disk. The word "memory" is never used to refer to the space on a drive (whether that's a hard drive, SSD, diskette, CD, DVD, or thumb drive). Space on a disk drive is normally called "storage" or simply "disk space."

Calling disk space "memory" isn't so much wrong as just unconventional. In a sense, disk space is, of course, memory, but the important thing to realize is that the word is never used that way, and if you do so, you do it at the risk of seriously confusing your audience.

So assuming that you mean disk space, not memory, Word and Excel normally default to the last place you saved to, If it's not doing that, please give us an example of what it does.
