A paragraph style defines a collection of character and paragraph properties (such as font name, font size, line spacing etc.) that you can apply in one step. A character style includes only character formatting (font, font size, etc.).

Note that Word supports other types of styles as well, but only the two types mentioned above can be included in a style set.

A style set is the collection of paragraph and character styles currently available in the gallery at the Home tab. You can switch to a different style set on the Design tab in Word. Hello IrBlueSky. That is a great question. Every Word document has styles. Heading 1, Heading 2, etc. A Style Set is a group of Styles. For example, if we have to create a document together and your Heading 1 may be 18 font size, italics, and a Red font. My Heading 1 is 22 font size, bold, and Blue Font. It would be difficult to merge your documents and my document together.

So a Style Set your heading 1 and mine are exactly the same. As would be our Heading 2 and other styles. New styles can also be created and added to the Style Set. Hopefully, this helps.

A Style is a group of formatting characteristics that can be applied to a paragraph or a character (or a table).

See Understanding Styles in Microsoft Word

Styles are at the heart of Word formatting.

A [Quick] Style Set is a special template that contains styles designated as going in the Quick Styles Gallery. It can be applied to a document or template and will replace any style definitions for that document/template. It can include paragraph styles, character styles or linked styles. I do not know whether it can contain table styles.

To save only certain styles to a custom style set, make sure any other styles are not marked for the Quick Styles gallery in the document you are using as the source for saving the Style Set.

Quick Style Sets can be defined to be attached or dependent on Themes.

This may be a plain English definition of Style Set but that isn't how Word and Microsoft use the term.
