I have tried deleting and reinserting in the new place, but Word skips the number that was deleted.

It is a known limitation in Word that any kind of numbering may appear incorrect until changes have been accepted (or rejected) and you have turned off the Tracked Changes function.

FYI--I finally heard from my boss. He said that after all the changes had been accepted in the document and track changes was turned off, it should re-sequence itself. I will find out for sure in a few weeks.

    Hello,

I'm an independent advisor that Microsoft asked to assist customers. I'm an experienced user of Office but do not speak for Microsoft. I've been assisting my fellow users for more than 20 years. I hope I can help you.

You need to delete the note in the document body. Did you do that?

I hope this information helps. Please let me know if you have any more questions or require further help.

    Regards

Try switching them from endnotes to footnotes, doing the move, and then switching back.

Hi, The question I posted was simplified. The actual situation is: I have a chapter to edit that has 67 endnotes. I was instructed to move the numbers for notes 1 and 2 to a position under notes 3 and 4, but before note 5.

I tried first to delete and re-insert. 1 and 2 became 5 and 6 and the text in the endnote section disappeared. I undid what I had done.

Back to square 1:  I tried to cut and paste the numbers. They became 5 and 6 again AND the text in the endnote section remained--except everything moved down. Now I have numbers 3 through 69 that link to the correct text.

But I can't get the program to renumber starting at 1. I know the new 3 has to become the new one, etc. That is ok. But I have to have the list renumber from 1. I went into the drop-down to format notes. It is already set to start at 1.  The Apply button is grayed out.

    Can you suggest a solution?

    Thank you so much.
