OneDrive syncing unchanged files

Hi,

I have noticed that multiple SharePoint files are showing as modified by users all at the same time. These files haven't actually been modified though and the users haven't even been online at the time shown.

Looking at the Office 365 Audit log I can also see multiple events for FileSyncUploadedFull occurring on the same files at 12:37. There is a record for every file that also shows in share point as updated at 5:37am

Does anyone know what is causing this sync to occur and can it be prevented as the files haven't changed. This is causing a lot of confusion with users?

Many Thanks

Nathan

    Hi Nathan,

I am trying to do a similar test on my environment to see if I get the same behavior, however, as I just enabled the audit logs 24 hours ago, it seems like some activities may not have been recorded yet.

Meanwhile, we suggest updating your OneDrive sync client to the latest version, as mine is on the latest version - to make sure that we have the same environment.

You can get the latest version of OneDrive here:

    Hi Sheen,

Yes logs are taken from the Security and Compliance Center > Search and investigation > Audit log search

The screenshot bellow shows the sync client version:

This is affecting a large number of users and libraries. It appears to affect all libraries that are synced with local machines.

    Many Thanks

    Nathan

    Hi Nathan,

So these logs are taken from the Security and Compliance Center > Search and investigation > Audit log search, correct?

Based on the article regarding audit log reports, FileSyncUploadedFull indicates that the user establishes a sync relationship and successfully uploads files for the first time from their computer to a document library.

This seems to be an unexpected result as you mention that the user already has the file synced and no changes were made.

    We would like to know:

    1. Whether all users are experiencing this issue (do all users show up in the report?)
    2. Whether all document libraries experience this issue.

We would like to try and narrow down the scope of this behavior. Please also provide us with the OneDrive sync client's version.

    Regards,

    Sheen

    Hi,

I can confirm the users are using the new sync client.

I am exporting the results of everything in the logs and filtering on FileSyncUploadedFull as this is the event that seems to correspond with the files and displayed access times.

I have noticed that SharePoint and one drive were using different region settings and now this is corrected the timestamps differences make sense however, there is still no explanation as to why one drive thinks it needs to re-sync the files therefore updating the timestamp.

    Hi Nathan,

Are the users syncing the SharePoint library using the OneDrive sync client? If so, we would first like to know which sync client the users are using, as there is one legacy and one new sync client for OneDrive for Business.

Additionally, we would like to know which activity in the audit log you are searching for, so we can check it out ourselves.

    Regards,

    Sheen
