In Word 2010 and 2016, I created an outline numbered list, using Shauna Kelly's time-tested routine. After closing the file, then reopening, the three styles are automatically renamed:
Outline List 1, which is numbered with 1. becomes 1 / a /i1
Outline List 2, which is lettered with a. becomes 1 / 1.1 / 1.1/11
Outline List 3, which is lettered with i. becomes Article / Section1
I'm following Shauna's directions, but I am not using Heading 1, etc. Instead, the Outline List 1 style is set to Level 1 and is based on No Style. The other 2 styles are based on the previous style, so there shouldn't be any interference from style inheritance. This happens in both Word 2010 and Word 2016. Anyone know what's going on here and how to prevent this?

No other programs were involved, this was 100% Word. However, I did find a reference on MSDN that it's a Word 2016 built-in style: Specifies a built-in Microsoft Word style for Word 2016 - WdBuiltinStyle Enumeration (Word)
I have never heard of a style called Unresolved Mention, but if the document was originally created in another program, the style name may have come from that other program.
This may have been an issue with style naming. I had called the original list style Outlines and the paragraph styles Outline List 1, Outline List 2 andOutline List 3.
I deleted all 4 and redid them, calling the list style NumbersLetters and the paragraph styles Numbered List 1, Numbered List 2 and Numbered List 3, to ensure I wasn't duplicating any built-in style names. Now it's working as expected and the styles retain their names.
This may or may not be related, but there was also a style called Unresolved Mention that I hadn't created. This style didn't show in any of the style lists, but did appear in the Organizer, where I was able to delete it. I can't find any explanation online about what Unresolved Mention is for or what creates it.
Which kind of styles are you using? In your example, "1 /a / i" and "1 / 1.1 / 1.1.1" and "Article/Section" are built-in list styles. You should only be using one list style per list, and nine paragraph styles (one for each level of the list style/multilevel list).
