Locking Text in a Document

For compliance reasons, our company would like to create some email templates in Word, with some text locked and some fields for users to fill in.  As an example:

We are conducting research on <topic> and would provide an honorarium of <amount> for your participation.

We want to lock all the bold and leave the < > fields for our employees to fill in.   Some of the locked text will be for legal and compliance reasons, so we don't want employees changing it willynilly.

Any advice on how to accomplish this?

    Hi,

    Please check this option:

    1. in the Ribbon, click Review, click Restrict Editing
    2. Select only the items you would like to be edited.
    3. In the Restrict Editing Option, check allow only this type of editing in the document. (choose comments)
    4. under Exceptions, you can choose/select everyone.
    5. click Start enforcement. - once you do this, you will have an option to type a password if you want to lock the settings so no one can change it, then save it as your template.

    Hope this helps. :-)

Have you tried what w8-user suggested?   It will NOT do what you want.

On the other hand, if you inset Legacy TextInput formfields where you have the <topic>, <amount? etc. and you protect the template or document for filling in forms, it will only be in those places that the user can enter text.

I think I found the easiest answer:

    1. Expose the Developer tab in the ribbon if it isn't already exposed.
    2. Select Restrict Editing.
    3. Click on #2--Editing Restrictions.

4.Highlight text that will be editable  by others under Exceptions and choose by whom (I chose Everyone).

    5.  Repeat step 4 for each field that will remain editable. You can even establish a password to prevent others from altering the template after you lock the document down.

The result is a doc that is locked except for chosen fields.

Thanks to all who suggested answers.

You make reference to email templates - where does email come into it.

The most secure method would be to use Legacy FormFields as then, you can protect the document for filling in forms and apply a password.

With Content Controls, while you could prevent the bold text from being edited by using the grouping facility, there is no way of applying a password to prevent the user from removing the grouping and then editing the bold text.
