How to reply to a comment in Word Online

I found the official instructions for replying to a comment in Word Online: (1) Display the Comments pane if necessary. (2) Click the comment. (3) Click the Reply icon. (4) Enter the reply.

That doesn't work. There is no Reply icon. Clicking the comment doesn't display any icons at all. Nor can I enter a reply by right-clicking the comment, rummaging through the menu, or any other means I can think of.

What is the essential (and well-hidden) step that the instructions don't disclose?

Word does let me reply to a comment in a test document, although not in the manner described in the instructions I found. When it opens the comment pane each comment is followed by a text box containing the "ghost text" "Reply..." and I can simply type the reply into the box and then click the right-arrowhead to complete it.

Jose, can you make any suggestions to move this toward a solution?

I "solved" the problem by exchanging comments with my internal client by email. This was inconvenient for the client and embarrassing for me. I'd very much like to know what went wrong so that I can deal with it promptly the next time it happens.

Hi, how are you, thanks for posting in our microsoft community, I'm here to help you solve your problem and I hope this information helps you

I suggest you to try to create a new test document, try adding comment to it and check if you are able to reply it.
If not, I should check if you installed all the Office updates if there’s any pending then install it and check if it work as expected. There’s a link below with instructions that’ll be useful for it:
