Open the file(document) edit it save the changes and allow the application (Student information Db) to store it as an attachment. When a user needs to access the Word document they can by clicking on the attachment button.

This has been a very useful option until Word/Office made a change (I believe Office or word 2010).

We would change the default accessibility in the settings area that allowed word to open by default an .xml file.

Hi Toby,

If the "XML document" you mentioned is .xml document, we'd like to explain that it is not available to open .xml document in Word. As a workaround, you can use Notepad to open and edit the .xml file.

We welcome and suggest you send feedback to UserVoice to let the related team know your suggestions and help us improve our products and service.

Thanks for your understanding.

Regards,

Tina

As other people have said, a file with the *.xml extension isn't intended to be opened (directly) in Word.

Some of these files are used by Word to store information (for example, as part of the compressed *.docx file format).

What are you trying to do with the *.xml file?

    Hi Toby,

As far as I know, XML files are encoded in plaintext and they can be opened with Notepad. According to the information you provided, I suppose it is what the XML file contains.

If you cannot open the XML file with Notepad or Wordpad, I suggest you check if you can open other XML files with Notepad/Wordpad to see if the issue only happens with the specific XML file itself.

Since we mainly focus on Office 365 related issues and questions, if you need  further help regarding the XML file, you may contact the file provider for further troubleshooting. Your understanding will be appreciated.
