How to resize or change MSWord Table Pointers/Cursors?

Hi,

When working with tables in MS Word, my mouse pointer/cursor often shrinks, or sometimes completely disappears.  I'm talking about the special pointers you see when trying to adjust the width or height of a row/column/cell in a table by moving your mouse over or around the border of a table / cell.    There is another cursor when you want to "Double-click to (hide/show) white space" between pages, which is also very small on my screen.

In fact, there are several mouse cursors in MS Word that don't appear in Windows (i.e. via control panel/mouse setings...), and I don't see a way to customize these or re-size them anywhere. It's very annoying when you need to resize a column or select all the the contents of a cell and you can't even see the cursor.  Note: Only Word is affected, and only when working with tables... the same type of resize cursors appear just fine in MS Excel and PowerPoint.  Heck - here's a list:

  1. Move your mouse between two columns of a table and the pointer should be two vertical lines with horizontal arrows pointing outward on either side.  For me this is a tiny blob.  it looks like a shrunken & melted version of the correct cursor. Sometimes the cursor just disappears.
  2. Move your mouse between two rows of a table and a 90-degree variant of the first pointer should appear.  For me this is also a tiny blob, or invisible.
  3. Move your mouse above a column of the table and you should get a black down-arrow. when you click it the entire column is selected.   For me this is a 2-pixel high vertical line. That's it - just 2 pixels.
  4. Move your mouse to the left of a cell, or a row, and you get a reverse select pointer: It looks like the normal arrow pointer, which points up and to the left, only it's pointing up and to the right.   For me this shows, but it's 1/3 the size of the normal pointer.
  5. Move your mouse left of the text in a cell and you get a small black reverse-pointer. Mine is more like a small black dot.

One more piece of info that may help identify where the problem is:  My laptop has a 4k screen.  nice, but I hate how small everything is @ 4k so I often change screen resolution.   At home I hook up to a USB 3.0 port replicator, where I run dual-1920x1200 monitors, and keep my laptop screen closed.    I *think* the mouse cursor problem happened the first time I started using these screens instead of the 4k monitor on my laptop, or maybe when I tried running all 3 monitors (my laptop and the dual monitors).  In any case now it's hosed on any screen and I can't seem to fix it.

Before you give me a generic answer that is already in another post, I thought I'd just tell you what I've tried:

  1. Picking a different scheme or individual cursors in mouse properties/pointers does nothing.  Again - these pointers used by word do not appear in control-panel mouse settings.
  2. Re-installing my mouse drivers after removing/rebooting does nothing.
  3. Yes the problem still exists whether I'm running full resolution my 4k laptop screen, or any other resolution, or on my 1920x1200 dual-monitors.  However I still strongly suspect it began when changing screen resolutions with MS Word open/running.
  4. As far as I can tell, only MS Word is affected.  Sometimes i see the same issues in MS WordPad when I am RDP'd onto another desktop, but WordPad appears ok on my desktop.

Although I don't think this cursor problem is tied to particular versions of software, I'm running:

  • MS Office Professional Plus 2016 version 10.0.4266.1001
  • Windows 10 Enterprise Version 1709 build 16299.785

I don't believe I am the only person with this problem - so if this is you please say you have this problem too!! :)

I suspect that those options are available only in Office 365 (the continually updated subscription version) and not in perpetual-license versions such as Office 2016.

You can post feedback via the Uservoice site at https://word.uservoice.com.

    Hi Brian,

I believe, like you, that this is tied to screen resolution.

    Please don't shoot the messenger.

This is a user-to-user support forum, not Microsoft. All anyone here can do is help you use the Word that is. The people who can make changes in the program do not read this forum.

To reach them, use the Feedback mechanism in Word (Smiley face under help, or under File).

You can also post on UserVoice Word for Windows.

They do read those. I have seen changes result from requests there.

I recommend changing your screen resolution (lowering it) if this is really a serious problem for you until someone at Microsoft gets around to changing it.

The feedback mechanism is the smiley face.

You can find it on the Help tab or under File > Feedback.

    (They move it around.)

    Help Tab

    Under the File button:

    Hi Charles,

Thanks a bunch for the quick reply and other sources to reach out to for help.  I've looked into both of your suggestions:

    1. I for some reason don't have the "feedback" option on my file menu.
    2. The Uservoice link you sent appears to be for suggestions on the "next version of office"... not quite appropriate to address an existing problem.

When I read through this link, it leads me back here as "The place to ask questions or leave comments about current versions" so here I am.  :-\

Also just an FYI - Lowering screen resolution does not help mitigate the problem much: it only makes the blob-like cursors a little larger, but they are still too small & blob-like, even at 1024x768.  Nice try though.  :)

Again - thanks for the response.  I promise my gun isn't loaded... ;)  We'll hope someone else has a suggestion...

    Best,

    Brian Hymer
