Absence of table tools in desktop version of word 2013

I am trying to edit an existing table and want to delete the table without losing its' content. A Google search indicates that there is a command for this in the layout tab of the ribbon called "table tools" where I can make a selection to convert the table. There are no table tools in the layout tab. The only place in the ribbon that has a table function is under the insert tab to create a table. There are some limited tools when I right click the mouse, but no other "table tools." Under additional commands there is a convert table to text function, but it is not operative when I add it to the quick bar. Why does my desktop version of Word 2013 not contain any table tools in the ribbon? Where is the convert to text function and why won't it work?

The contextual Table Tools tab, which has two subtabs, Layout and Design, is displayed only when the insertion point is in a table. If you are not seeing the Table Tools, perhaps what you are dealing with is not actually a table?

I am dealing with a table. By "contextual table tools" do you mean the tools that appear when right clicking the mouse? This does not answer the question. I still can not find any advanced table tools. Why are they not loaded on the layout tab?

The contextual table tools are on the ribbon, assuming that the insertion point is inside a table.

Assuming that the "table-like" structure can be selected/edited, what you are dealing with could be newspaper columns. On the Layout tab, click Columns, and finally click "One."
