Hi guys,

Question

+++++++

Im new to Office 365.

Just joined my company and seen two “MS=“ TXT domain verification records for the same domain.

#! What could be the purpose for using them?

#! Is the domain verified from time to time using new records?

Thanks.

Hi ADiAdi2,

Thank you for your message.

In our case, if you add a domain and you only need one "MS=" TXT record to verify.

The situation you are experiencing may be due to the previous failure to add a domain, and then repeatedly add this domain, in which case there will be a different "MS=" TXT record.

At the same time, as you mentioned above, the format of record is indeed the same as MS=“ms”+”eight digits”.

Regards,

Sukie

HI ADiAdi2

The domain name cannot change , cannot be modified .

The format , number of digits depend on the mail provider. In fact can be a MX record instead of a TXT. Is like the verification code you receive in your phone to confirm an operation. You bank might use 8 digits, your email account might use 6 digits, there is no predefined format

I have two TXT MS myself because time ago I removed the domain and then added it again to the Office portal

    Hi Sukie,

    Thank you for the reply.

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    This must be the reason.

    Why the domain will fail to be added?

    The “MS” TXT is renewed with every failure to add a domain?

    At the same time, as you mentioned above, the format of record is indeed the same as MS=“ms”+”eight digits”.

    If it is not confidential and such: how are the 8 digits assigned? What kind of algorithm? Is some info hardcoded, encoded etc in them?

    Thank you for your professional support.

    Hi Germain,

    Thank you for the reply.

    I) If your domain was previously in another mail service, like Google, may have another MS record, for the same reason , to validate domain ownership.

    Sorry if my comment is not in topic :)

    My understanding is that the TXT record lke “MS=“ is used for domain ownership verification >> https://help.hover.com/hc/en-us/articles/221933708-How-to-Office-365-domain-verification-and-email-configuration

    Snip /* NOTE: This TXT record is used only to verify that you own the domain; it doesn’t affect any other connections. */

    Could be that the domain name changed?

    Can see one record starting with a number lower than another.Maybe its the oldest one.

    Btw: how is the record format elected?  All are like >> MS=“ms”+”eight digits”

    II) That is a one time operation and there is no need to repeat as long your are using the same mail provider.

    mail provider?

    Thank you.
