Underscore character still disappearing in Word

There are numerous threads going back several years describing how the underscore character disappears when Word is at a zoom level other than 100%.

There are various workarounds such as using a different zoom level, underlining the character, and setting line spacing to multiple, but these are all hacks that require modifying many places in a document or being content with only one zoom setting.

Are there any better solutions?  Is Microsoft planning to fix this before some horror story occurs with something going wrong due to a missing underscore?

When I paste all lines of the text of the file using Keep Text Only the problem goes away.  The line spacing changes to Multiple.

The file that Cliff Gu sent me does not have the problem, but line spacing is set to multiple.

When I paste all lines of the text of the file into a new document using Keep Source Formatting, the problem persists.  The line spacing stays at Exactly.  When I then change line spacing to Multiple, the problem goes away, but extra blank lines are added to the document, making this maneuver unsuitable for repairing this problem in a large document.

When I paste only the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT line, the line spacing is set to Exactly, but I don't get the problem.

This seems related to paragraphs.  Here are some Option settings that may be relevant:

    Dear Mickey,

Thanks for your effort and providing the file in the private message.

About the private information in the Account page, you can mask it like the following screenshot is showed and provide the Account page for our reference.

I do a fast test with your file provided in the private message and can reproduce the issue in our environment. However, when I copy the text to a new file created with the latest version of the Word 2016 application, the issue goes away. I have attached the file in the private message. Please do a test with it to see and let us know the result.

So the issue seems to be the specific settings of the text in the original file. If you can provide the detailed steps about how you create the text with the underscore character, I’ll create another test file with the same steps for further troubleshooting.

    Best Regards,

    Cliff

    Dear Mickey,

    Thanks for your updates.

From your screenshots, it seems that you are using the Monthly Channel. Could you also upload the Account page in your Word 2016 application for our reference?

As I can’t reproduce the issue in our environment now with the same version of the Word 2016 application, I’d like you to confirm whether the issue happens in the specific file or all files in your environment. I notice that you seems to use some customized add-ins in the Word 2016 application and the Office 2016 applications’ theme seems to be customized as well. Could you confirm that as well?

Meanwhile, please upload the affected file in the private messagefor us to do a test to see if the issue can be reproduced in our environment.

    Thanks for your effort.

    Cliff

I made a simple example, which fails to show the underscores at zoom 110, 130 and 140, but shows them correctly at zoom 100, 120, and 150.  This is illustrated below with version and paragraph information shown.  One can work around this bug by changing line spacing, zoom level, or underlining the underscore, but surely Microsoft does not expect such hacking from users.

Please ignore the typo of the extra 3 "Office3".

    Zoom 130: no underscores

    Zoom 150: underscores present

    Dear Mickey,

About the underscore character, do you mean what is showed in the following screenshot?

If yes, it seems that I can’t reproduce the issue in my environment now. So about the issue symptom in your environment, could you upload some related screenshots? From your description, it seems that you can reproduce the issue in your environment when the zoom level isn’t 100%. Meanwhile, I’d like you to check if the issue only happens in the specific file.

Please also check if you  are using the latest version of the Office 2016 applications. If no, upload the version, restart the computer and do a test to see the result. Could you also upload a full screenshot of the Account page in the Word 2016 application you are using for our reference? You can go to the Account page via File>Account.

Note: Remove any private information before uploading the screenshots.

    Best Regards,

    Cliff
