Change Microsoft Office 365 icons?

Hi,

I just got a Surface Laptop and I'm still setting it up. One thing I like to do is use custom icons for things like the file explorer, spotify, chrome, excel, etc. etc. I've been able to swap my custom icons for all but the Office apps. What I usually do is pin the program to my taskbar, right click, right click again on the program name, and then click "Properties" which brings up a lmenu where I can change the icon. But when I right click word/excel/powerpoint/onenote, there is no "Properties" option. It's just "Open" or "Run as administrator."

Any ideas? I can't figure it out. I imagine there has to be a workaround.

Thanks

*edit* - The issue is resolved. I don't know if it is possible to change the icons for the "App" version of these programs that comes preinstalled on the Surface Laptop. I downloaded the full versions of the programs through the Microsoft Office Hub after upgrading to Windows 10 Pro and now I can do it just as I would for any other program. Thanks all who responded.

    Hi K36me2

My name is Andre Da Costa; an Independent Consultant, Windows Insider MVP and Windows & Devices for IT MVP. I'm here to help you with your problem.

    Press Windows key + R

    Type: C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

    Hit Enter

You should be able to right click and choose properties for the Office apps from there and make your modifications. You can then pin them to the Taskbar.

Find it strange you are not seeing it, since it works here:

Hi K36me, I'm Graeme, an independent adviser here to help.

Windows generally only allows modification of icons for shortcuts, so I'll show you a method that might be a workaround:

    • Create a shortcut icon on your desktop for the app.
    • Right-click the icon and change the icon using the way you've mentioned.
    • Once the icon has been changed, drag-and-drop the shortcut onto your taskbar.

If that doesn't work, please let me know and I'll see what else we can try! Thanks!

    Something similar.

Create a shortcut to the application(s) on the desktop

Right click on the shortcut on the desktop

    Select Properties

In the Shortcut Tab, click on "Change Icon" button.

You can use one of the icons embedded in the application, or point to a different source for the icon.

Click on OK and Apply to apply the change to the desktop.

Right click on the desktop icon again and select "Pin to taskbar".

Note: it seems the taskbar keeps a separate cache of icons after they are pinned. So if you already have the application pinned to the taskbar with the "wrong" icon, unpin it first.  it took me a couple of tries to actually see the changed icon show up on the taskbar.

After you pin to taskbar, you can delete it from the desktop if you want.

    <edit>

Sorry, I tried this on Word 2010, I can't confirm that it will work with 365. That is a horse of a different color and may not work exactly the same

    Hi Graeme,

Thanks for the reply! I should have mentioned, I did try this. I can change the icon for the shortcut, but when I drag it to the taskbar it reverts to the original icon.
