If the endnotes were generated by a 3rd party program or were manually created or have been converted to plain text Word's conversion feature is not able to convert them.

If this doesn't clarify the issue pleae go to Word> About Word in the main menu to determine the present Version of your Office 2011 software. Include that in your reply along with some of the document's history.

For troubleshooting purposes it might help to see whether the conversion will work in a new/different document.

Well, what it does is verify that your software is as current as that edition can be so it rules out the possibility that updates might be needed... That should be one of the first pieces of information determined when troubleshooting an issue. It's usually pointless to chase symptoms if the software isn't up to date. Having ruled that out please provide the additional details I requested:

Have you tested in a different document? Create a new document, add a few annotations, then see whether you can convert them.

What is the file type [filename extension] of the document?

What other history & descriptive info about the document can you provide?

I created them in word I cannot fathom what the problem is, and the only solution (to manually redo each of the 47 endnotes as footnotes is a bit daunting to say the least. I don't know why this is happening to me but it really really sucks.
