Office spelling language driving me crazy – just want English

I work in an international company where many have different language settings. I also have multiple languages/keyboards on my machine that I switch between (English is default).

And we obviously share and collaborate on documents, and often create documents that contain copy-paste content from other documents.

But when producing and sharing documents, the actual content is always English. So I need language for Spelling to always be English. But no matter what I do, pressing Set as Default on English in the spelling language menu etc, Office keeps switching to other languages on content and part of documents, so I have to correct spelling language over and over.

Especially troublesome in PowerPoint where every little element can have wrong spelling language and needs to be changed, all the time, when producing documents.

I hope I am missing something very obvious here and somebody can tell me how to lock Office spelling to English language. Please :)

Thanks Gloria, when you do those actions, have you checked that the spelling language of the relevant content elements have actually changed? (in PPT on Windows: select element, Review, Language, Proofing Language).

Because I have also observed that it sometimes temporarily stops highlighting the spelling mistakes dynamically when you do changes like that. But, it doesn't actually change the language settings of the content box, so the spelling mistake highlighting will return later. Because it is still set at the wrong language.

I posted here because I was hoping/expecting for some sort of override switch to this behavior that I just hadn't found. But even if that wasn't possible, I thank you for all the help trying to solve this. If you have contacts with Office product team, please request they consider making Office suitable for use in international companies ;)

Thanks for the effort Gloria, I was hoping there was some solution/override to this I had not found.

Actually I was sort of expecting that there was. Because I can't believe having to request that the Office product team make Office suitable for collaborative use in international companies....

But I guess there is not, but thanks again for looking into it!

    Hi Arne,

    Thanks for your reply.

It seems that it works for me after I copy content in an English proofing to another one, it still spell checks as English.

Do I miss any steps? I still want to confirm the information with you and test from my side again.

Please share the information with me at your convenience:

    1. The version of your Office and the product name like Office 365 ProPlus.
    2. Capture screenshots of the proofing settings and language settings in Options settings.

You can uncheck the "Detect language automatically" in proofing settings to see if it helps.

    Best Regards,

    Gloria

    Hi Arne,

I also have multiple languages on my computer and the spelling language is always set to English.

Hi Gloria, thanks for answering. And, when you copy content from other documents with different language settings than English into your document, your document will still spell-check it as English?

    1. Please capture a screenshot of your Office product name and the version number refer to this article: What version of Office am I using?
    2. Could you please share the steps you change the spelling language menu with me?
    3. Please also capture some screenshots of the behavior and I can test from my side.

    Best Regards,

    Gloria
