Cannot find a valid answer anywhere so far!

I have 2 W10 Home PC's both up to date and both with Microsoft Office 2016 - both just updated Version 1901 Build 11231_2013 Click to run . Both updated BUT on one PC the Icon for all .doc files is now blank - no blue W - how to fix?

Associations all OK - word automatically opens doc filed but not W icon just a  blank white icon

Repairing both off and online - absolutely same!

Deleting/repairing icon store - no different?

Amy suggestions as how to fix?

I agree with you that the new install or in-place upgrade of Windows 10 may take a considerable amount of your time. To avoid this drastic step, we highly suggest that you perform the alternative solution that we have concluded which is migrating all of your files from the user profile in question to the new one.

Thanks - but already tried the obvious here.

The .doc file - same file on both PC's but a blank icon on the bad - automatically will open Word when double clicked.

Have tried the 'open with' approach and normally already associated with Word. Here it is easy to re-associate with say NotePad - a text document - hence change the icon of that file. Re-associating with Word returns the same 'blank' icon as previous.

So far this problem only seems to relate to .doc files and word. Excel and Publisher files look OK. .docx and rather old versions of Word .doc files both have a blue W somewhere in there icon to identify Word.

This is definitely something that updating Office on THAT PC caused to happen change.

I have tried the 'modify' under the Apps + Features within W10 settings for Microsoft and whether I do this the off or online way this has no effect other than downloading  a very large file and having to re-activate etc,

    Hi RJC_UK,

I appreciate the information that you’ve provided. I’d just want to confirm, are you able to open the .doc files that shows as blank white icon properly?

Also, have you already tried the Open with option in opening the .doc files through the computer that was referred to as ‘BAD’ PC? If you haven’t done this yet, you may try to do so. Follow these steps:

    1. Open File Explorer and look the .doc file.
    2. Right-click on the file and select Word 2016. Once an option appears that will ask you on how do you want to open this file, make sure to put a check mark or select the Always use this app to open .doc files option.

    Hi RJC_UK,

Sometimes setting up the Word desktop app as a default application for your documents can resolve your concern. To do so, click the Start Menu, type Default app settings and then click Enter. Select Choose default apps by file type, go to .doc and then choose the Word 2016 for its default app.

If the above steps don’t work for you, could you send us a screenshot of the exact concern for us to have a better overview of it? This way we can further isolate the concern and provide an accurate solution. Here is a link for instructions on how to include screenshots in your post.

Please respond to this thread to let me know how the issue progresses. Similarly, if you have more questions, please inform me by replying to this post.
