Failed to load the security library: (libgssapi_krb5.dylib) (50366)

We have several Macs with 10.14.2 and use Excel (16.21) ODBC to connect to a SQL server database with AD kerberos authentication.

Two of the Macs started issuing the error "Failed to load the security library: (libgssapi_krb5.dylib)" on every user. The error happens every time we update the excel sheet.

The connection worked well before and it still works on every other Mac.

One of the Macs the issue was solved by deleting the Excel app (from application) and reinstalling it but on another it did't solve the issue.

Is there any way to restore the security library or anyone knows the origin of this problem?

Finally I've got a reply from microsoft with a fix that works:

"While we work to fix this issue, there is a change you can make on your computer that will avoid the error.  This change may cause the update installer to have a problem if you want to install an update.  If a problem happens in future updates, you would need to go to Finder and remove Microsoft Exel from your Applications folder and then install the updated version of Excel.  After updating Excel, you would need to apply the change mentioned below again to avoid the Kerberos error.

To avoid the error, do the following:

  1. Open the Terminal app on your Mac.
  2. Run this command:

sudo ln -s /usr/lib/libgssapi_krb5.dylib /Applications/Microsoft\ Excel.app/Contents/Frameworks/libgssapi_krb5.dylib

  1. Since this is making a change in a protected folder, you need to provide an administrator password to successfully complete the command.

    Hi Rui,

    In case that this is caused by the cache files, please try the following steps and see if it would work:

    1. Quit the Excel application;
    2. Open Finder > Go > Go to folder > input ~/Library/Containers > Go;
    3. Delete the com.microsoft.Excel folder;
    4. Restart Excel.

    If the above steps couldn't solve the issue, please also try the following steps:

    1. Quit the Office applications;
    2. Open Finder > Go > Go to folder > input ~/Library > Go;
    3. Search for UBF;
    4. Delete the following three folders:

    UBF8T346G9.ms

    UBF8T346G9.Office

    UBF8T346G9.OfficeOsfWebHost

    Note: This will remove the licenses and you need to reactivate Office. You may need to backup your emails in case of any data lose**.**

    1. Restart Excel and sign in again.

    Please let us know if the above methods could help to fix the issue and let us further assist you.

    Best Regards,

    Nathan

    Regarding the safe mode, it didn't help.

    All Macs are completelywireless, no network cable to try it on but it's not a wireless issue, other Macs continue to work fine.

    There were no recent updates for MacOs or any other new app.

    Best regards,

    Rui

    Hi Rui Miguel,

    To check whether this issue is related to the add-ins or other software, Please try connecting to your SQL Server database again in the Safe Mode of Mac.

    If you could connect to the SQL Server database in the Safe Mode, then you may try disabling the add-ins or close the other applications on the Mac and see which one caused the issue.

    In case that this is caused by the network environment, please also try to switch the network connection and see if the issue could be fixed. for example, you may try switching from wireless connection to wired connection, or use the connection of another Mac that doesn't have this issue.

    If the above suggestions could not help, please provide us with the following information so that we could further assist you:

    1. Please click "Excel" in the top menu and select "About Excel", then capture a screenshot of the version information;
    2. Please check if there were any changes in your iMacs before this happened, for example if you have installed or updated any programs.

    Regards,

    Nathan
