I'm using Office 365 on two of my computer, one laptop and one desktop. Both running Windows 10 all update's up to date for Windows and Office. However on the laptop when I open any of my Excel templates shortcuts, it opens the template. On the desktop using the same shortcut file it opens a new file as it should. (Time Sheet - Master.xltx - Shortcut)

I need help sorting this out as I want the shortcut to create a  new file, as the template keep getting over written.

I have this exact problem, and it isn't limited to shortcuts. Even double-clicking the template for in Explorer opens the template and refuses to open the file as a new document.

This started occurring for me about 2-3 weeks ago. I had no issues like this previously.

First it was on my personal machine, which I was using until I got my work machine setup after hardware service. Now, it does the same on my work machine which has a fresh Windows 10 install and a fresh install of Office 365. This is also occurring with Word templates. Outlook message templates do not seem to be affected.

I have templates that I use for each  forjob/project tracking measurement data, submitting requests for information, and writing form letters/emails, work proposals and invoices. All of my templates are affected, and I've even tried restoring older versions, which demonstrate the same issue. A few of the templates were initially made in Office 2016, but they've all been updated and amended within Office 365 apps. Many are native to Office 365 apps. The result is the same, regardless.

I use OneDrive to maintain a full document backup and mirror in the cloud. I have setup the key features that enable integration with Explorer. But i keep all my template files stored locally for fast access, and when I'm in the field without Network connection.

This is killing my productivity! Send help!

    Hi Bob,

All I use is the function to create a shortcut using the mouse.

    1. Place the cursor on the file, press the right button on the mouse and "Copy"
    2. Place the cursor on the desktop and press the right button on the cursor and "Paste Shortcut"

This has worked every time on all the other computers I have tried. Except my Laptop.

On my laptop I have tried opening the file from within Excel, New / Personal / CAB Master, it then opens "CAB Master - Excel" which is the template file.

On all other computer it opens "CAB Master1 - Excel" which is a new file, and needs to have a new file name added when saving.

Would it be helpful if I send you the template file, maybe I have done something wrong, but I can't see it.

Can't see any way to attached a file.

    Julian

We would like to replicate the issue, for us to do that, kindly provide to us the step by step process of how was the shortcut created. We also would like to have a screenshot of your expected result, you can use your laptop to do this, and a screenshot of the issue you’re experiencing.

    We’ll wait for our response.

    Bob

    Hi Bob,

    1.

I run all my spreadsheets from a Drop box, all my templates are stored there. That way If I need to make a change to the template, I only need to do the change once. That way anyone using the template is using the most up to date version of the template.

    2.

Question 2, I can’t really elaborate, as I copy and create a shortcut on the desktops.

Not sure what is going on, as I have now tried it on five different computer and they all create a new file when opened, except my laptop, it opens the template every time. It's not even the computer that the templates are created on.
