OneNote Web Clipper not clipping pages in iOS

Two days OneNote web clipper stopped clipping webpage content for me on my iPhone and iPad. Both running the latest version of iOS, and Safari.

When I clip a page it processes for a minute or two an then just save the website but no content from the webpage.  I have had the problem before but pretty rarely - now it won't clip and pages. The pages are from a wide variety of websites.

I have the latest version of Safari.  Any suggestions on who to fix this please?

This is for my work so I can't afford this lack of reliability.  That said, I don't know if it's a problem on my end or with the Web Clipper service, but either way, it worked earlier this week and nothing has changed on my end other than the usual automatic updates.  I did see that a new version of OneNote was installed on my iPhone tow days ago - a coincidence?

Thanks in advance.

Phil

    Hi Phillip,

I have updated the iOS to 12.4. But it still works well by my side. Therefore, it seems no bug in the app itself. If the issue persists by your side, please try the steps below and see the result:

    1.       Save your favorite pages to bookmark or favorites, close all the opening pages, go to Phone settings > safari > Clear history and website data and see the result.

    2.       Change another network connection environment to see the result. For example, you can switch between 4G and wifi and check whether the issue happens in both environments.

    3.       Make sure all the changes of the notebooks have been synced. Then go to Phone settings > OneNote > Reset OneNote to see the result.

If the issue persists after trying all the steps above, please let me know:

    1.    A screenshot about the issue that “just save the website but no content from the webpage”.

    2.    Does the issue happen to all websites or only a specific one?

    3.    Please go to phone settings > general > device management > check whether there’s anything there.

    Thanks,

    Rena

    Hi Rena,

I saved all the pages I had open for clipping to Apple Notes (too many for favorites, and I don't want them there - as I said, I clip several hundred web pages every week).

A couple of days ago I cleared all the website data in Safari, closed Safari and cleared the memory on my phone.

I still have the same problem - it occurs for web page from a wide range of websites, mainly found using google news, but also when I download the full version of the website, not just the amp version, and not just the mobile version of the website.

Screenshots attached - same problem with wifi and wireless data network connections (AT&T).

OneNote has been synched on my iPhone.

My understanding is that the clipping on iOS saves essentially a screenshot of the selected web page and loads that screenshot into the chosen notebook/section that is stored on the cloud, and when OneNote synchs it downloads the news page(s) and any other changes from the cloud to the local device.  Is this correct?

I have not tried "Reset OneNote" - what does this do? Does it delete the data stored on the local device? I have over 11 GB of data own my OneNote notebooks and I don't want to download all of that data again.  I also have some notebook pages on my phone from a year or so ago for which the page title uploaded to the cloud copy but the page content did not (which conflicts with my understanding of the clipping process I described above). MS Support could not help me with this problem and I haven't had time to try to fix it.  It only exists in 2 or 3 sections in several hundred sections over 11 notebooks, and has existed since well before this current clipping problem, but I don't want to delete the OneNote data on my phone as I will lose the content of those webpages that has not sync'd tot he cloud version.

There is no device management option in settings > general > on my phone. I have iOS 12.4 installed.

I can't see how to add the screenshots to this post - I will see if I can PM them to you.

Also, an semi-related question - is OneNote Web Clipper available for the Chromium version of Edge yet? I haven't yet been able to find an answer for that online.

    Thanks again for your help.

    Hi Phillip,

Thanks for the updates. The Safari should update following the iOS system version. The version on my iPhone now is still iOS 12.1.2 but not 12.4. I will update it when I have wifi environment and see the result. Any updates will be post back soon.

In the meantime, for whether the opening page volume is causing cache problem to affect this case, we can narrow down by opening  a new inPrivate window and see the result.

By the way, you can save pages to bookmark or privates, it does not need to always keep opening so many pages.

    Regards,

    Rena

Hi Rena, thanks for your help with this.

I am using Safari, latest version, on iOS - iPhone and iPad.

I have a lot of web pages open, probably 50 of more. I am doing research and its much quicker to open the pages i need and then clip them in a decent sized batch.

I haven’t had problems with this volume in the past. Could it be that i have a cache problem on my devices - cache being full of whatever? But none of the pages will clip anything other than the URL in the last couple of days.

    Hi Phillip,

The OneNote Web Clipper on iPhone and iPad is a built-in feature in OneNote app for iPhone and iPad.

I tested in OneNote iOS version 16.28 (19080905) on my iPhone in Safari, it will send web page picture and URL to the OneNote page. Then I tested in Chrome, it seems it will not send page picture but only page URL.

Can I confirm which browser are you using?

    Thanks,

    Rena
