Word 365 wants to continue numbered list when I want to restart at 1.

Working on Word 365.  I have several documents that contain many multi-level numbered lists.  When I initially create numbered lists by typing (1 <period> <space>), Word initiates the numbered list perfectly with a quarter-inch indentation.  I exit the list by pressing Enter several times.

This works for a number of lists.  At some point, when I initiate a new list, suddenly Word wildly indents the list by several inches.  When I back tab several times, it turns out that Word thinks I am continuing the list from the previous list.  TO resolve this, I can either manually reset numbering to 1 or I can manually select numbering in the ribbon.  Both of these solutions take a lot of time (comparatively speaking).  This is particularly laborious due to the numbered lists I am creating.

I tried correcting the situation by copying exactly what I wanted to a new document but the new document perpetuates this problem.  I do not have this problem when creating a brand new document.

How can I correct this so that Word does not automatically think that the list is being continued?

Thanks in advance.

    Hi David -

    Thanks for responding.

In order to exit a numbered list, I am already pressing Enter twice.  My expectation then is that I should be able to start a new list by simply entering 1, period, and a single space.  Instead, what happens is that the list is continued from the previous list.  The number one does appear as the first item but is very much indented to the right.  If I then decrease indentation all the way to the left (either by pressing Back Tab or clicking the Decrease Indent icon), the number changes to the next value for that level.

I am able to reset numbering by selecting that option for the new list.  I am also able to start a new (non-continuous) list by selecting the number icon in the Home tab.  The issue is that I should not have to do either of these two options.  It is very time-consuming to have to do either of these options while I am creating many lists.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi. Ed

    My Name is David B.

Independent Advisor I'd like to help.

To do this, do the following:

    1. Position the cursor where you want a numbered or bulleted list.
    2. On the Home tab, click the arrow next to bullets or Numbering.
    3. Choose a style and start writing.
    4. Press ENTER every time you want a new bullet or number, or press ENTER twice to end the list.

Tip: When you start a paragraph with an asterisk and a space (*) or with the number 1 and a period (1.), Word will display the AutoCorrect Options button and start generating a bulleted list or a numbered list, respectively. If you do not want a bulleted or numbered list, click the AutoCorrect Options button, and then click Stop automatic bulleted list creation or Stop automatic creation of numbered lists.

    Reset numbering in 1:

    1. Click on the item you want to be the first in the new list.
    2. CTRL + click or click on the item and then click Reset Numbering.

    Indent to list items

    1. Select the lines in the list to which you want to indent.
    2. On the Home tab, in the paragraph group, click Increase indent.

    Remove items from a list:

    1. Select the items you want to delete.
    2. Press DELETE.

Stop a numbered or bulleted list, follow one of these procedures:

    • At the end of the bulleted or numbered list, press the RETURN key twice.

    • Select the line of text you do not want in the list, and then on the Home tab, in the paragraph group, click Bulleted List or numbered list.

    Regards...

If you set up a multilevel list as Charles suggested, it would take care of both restarts and indentation.

    Hi Doug -

Thanks for responding to my private email and validating the issue.  From your response, it appears that, in fact, Word is operating incorrectly.  DO you know how I can raise this as an issue to Microsoft?

    Thanks - Ed

I am unable to replicate the issue by following your steps.

If you send me a copy of the document, referencing this thread in the covering email message, I will investigate the issue.
