Hi Biplob,
The time taken to sync the files depends on your network bandwidth and the amount of data you want to upload.
From your post, I understand you wish to migrate your files from Dropbox to SharePoint online. Since there’s no direct way to transfer the files from Dropbox to SharePoint online, you must first store your Dropbox files to your local drive and then upload them to SharePoint online.
To transfer files and folders from your local drive to SharePoint online library:
- Sync files with the OneDrive sync client in Windows
- Use Upload option to upload files and folders or you can upload files to a document library in SharePoint by dragging them from your computer and dropping them into the document library.
When uploading large files or many files that add up to a large total size to a document library, you may get some issues or errors due to the file size limit in SharePoint Online or timeout errors in your version of Internet Explorer. Steps you can take to get around these errors include:
- Upload 100 or fewer files when using drag and drop.
- Avoid uploading files larger than 15 GB, which is the maximum default file size.
- When uploading files and folders, you need to be aware of path and file name length. SharePoint Online and OneDrive for Business support up to 400 characters for the total file and path length.
To answer, “What is the difference between SharePoint and One Drive?”, SharePoint online and OneDrive for business are the Microsoft cloud service that connects you to all your files. Organizations use SharePoint to create websites. You can use it as a secure place to store, organize, share, and access information from any device. Here are the articles which can help you understand more about SharePoint and OneDrive for business.
To answer your last question “*Is it necessary to keep the document in SharePoint to give access to multiple people”,*it depends on you. If you’re working on a file by yourself, save it to OneDrive. Your OneDrive files are private unless you share them with others. If you’re working as a team and wish to collaborate with others on your projects, then store your files to a SharePoint team site. for more info, see Should I save files to OneDrive or SharePoint?
Let me know if you need further help.
Thanks,
Neha
