Hi,

When I try to group days in my excel pivot table i get 'Cannot group that selection'.  I have tried the text to columns and it changes the dates to numbers, I have experienced this problem with most of my data dumps and I need learn how to fix the grouping issue.

Any ideas/expalnations?

Thanks

    Describe what you've tried .

Give us a small sample, 2 -4 entries per month, 2-4 months. So we can play with the same data layout you have and maybe come up more specific solutions.

Upload Example - Trouble Shooting - Share OneDrive File

Trouble shooting problems in files can be like a visit to the dentist, a long, slow painful process of us trying to “extract” the clues needed to recognize the problem in a back and forth flow of questions and answers so that we can come up with a / “the” solution.

Often it is faster and easier for everyone if we have a “sample file” get "hands on", to look at, and to “play with”.

This next link provides some tips on setting up a sample file and specific instructions for uploading and "sharing" it for us to access:

Includes a link to a macro to randomize text in Word.

    Hi Maggie,

Thank you for your response, I have been exporting data from Sage and when I create a pivot table from the data, the dates will not allow me to group them into months.

I have tried what I think are the common solutions but with no success.

      Thanks,

      Rich

An example file with a description of which date, and types of groups would be helpful.

In the mean time, here are several articles about grouping dates in pivot tables. Maybe one of them will solve your problem

Grouping lots of data by dates is easy using Excel's PivotTable. Susan Harkins shows you how.

A PivotTable is a great way to summarize a lot of data. The technical side of things is simple — you insert a PivotTable and add the appropriate fields. If you're grouping by dates, you'll have lots of options, but all of the possibilities aren't as obvious as you might like. In this article, I'll show you how to group a PivotTable by date components. I'll also show you a few of the less-than-obvious possibilities.

    Hi,

Share the link from where I can download your Excel file.  Ensure that your Pivot Table is present in that file.
