Excel will not close workbook when clicking X if more than 1 workbook is open

I have tried everything that I have found online to remedy the solution

  • Repaired excel
  • reinstalled office
  • ran as administrator
  • added environment variable UseLibXL 1
  • … many other suggested solutions

Nothing has worked.  Every time I open more than 1 excel document I cannot close any of them until I close out the first document I opened.  How do I fix this.  I really cannot have more than 1 document at a time open to safely edit the documents and I sometimes reference 3 or more at a given time.  Need to be able to do so now, but cant, because this stupid program isn't working right.  Help

Open your excel docs using the safe switch, (for each) then retest.

    I cannot reproduce your issue

trying to run the offscrub.exe doesn't work.  It says it is wrapping up a few things and the program will restart.  Nothing happens
