    A .xlf file is a special type of XML file (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XLIFF). You should be able to open it using Notepad.

    Thank you very much for your swift answer. I tried opening the file with Notepad but what appears (1) not look at all as it should. The file comes from MATECAT, an online translation software engine, and I should be able to open it as a bilingual editable file, to review it. It was not possible, please see what I got:

    (1)

    ?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?><xliff xmlns="urn:oasis:names:tc:xliff:document:1.2" xmlns:its="http://www.w3.org/2005/11/its" xmlns:itsxlf="http://www.w3.org/ns/its-xliff/" xmlns:okp="okapi-framework:xliff-extensions" its:version="2.0" version="1.2" xmlns:mtc="https://www.matecat.com"><file datatype="x-docx" filter="com.matecat.filters.basefilters.DefaultFilter" original=[PRIVATE].docx" source-language="en-GB" target-language="es-ES" tool-id="matecat-converter 1.2.5"><header><reference><internal-file form="base64">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

    Talk to someone at the METCAT site.

    The code:

    ?xml version="1.0"

    at the start of the file does indicate it is an XML file. That should be text.

    But later on in it says:

    original=[PRIVATE].docx

    That suggests there is something to do with a Word document.   The "private" part suggest maybe it is encrypted.

    I tried opening a random DOCX in Notepad. It does not look anything like what you have.
