OneNote and the Cloud

My understanding is that with the new OneNote all notebooks have to be stored on the cloud.  Is this true?  What is the remedy for sensitive, IP, private notebooks that we do not want to store in the cloud (i.e. notebooks that I normally kept on a protected company server/computer?  I guess we should not use OneNote?

My company having a data-breach is on them.  The cloud having a data breach is on Microsoft??  My company will hold whom responsible??

Hi Benji,

Thank you for choosing to use OneNote.

Based on your description, you have concern that whether Microsoft can protect your company's confidentiality because OneNote for Win 10 just can store your notebooks on the cloud.

So my suggestion is to use OneNote 2016, you can download OneNote 2016 from this link. OneNote 2016 for Windows lets you create a new notebook to any folder including local folders or network shares. You can go to File>New>This PC.

The button named ‘Create in a different folder’ lets you choose any other folder (local or network) to create your notebooks, and you can choose a local place on your protected company server.

To save the notebook to the default OneDrive folder ( Documents/OneNote Notebooks ) type a Notebook Name and click ‘Create Notebook’.

Additionally, here is an article about the difference between OneNote (for Win 10)and OneNote 2016.

Thanks for your understanding and support for our products.

Regards,

Jazlyn

    Hi Benji,

    Thank you for your reply.

About “OneNote 2016 will stop being supported ” you mentioned, as Bernd said, Microsoft decided to extend its support period, which means OneNote 2016 will not stop being supported until 2025/10/14. So you can continue using OneNote 2016 that works best for you ,and we will continue to help you solve the problem you encountered with it.

Additionally, about your suggestion that “Microsoft gives another option than the dark cloud”, we recommend you feedback your suggestion to OneNote Team. You can open OneNote 2016 , click File, then click Feedback, choose I Have a Suggestion and write your suggestion. Microsoft is committed to continuously improving your experience with our products.

Thank you for your trust and understanding again.

    Regards,

    Jazlyn

Jazlyn,  I had IT load OneNote 2016 to my new laptop, redirected the storage, and I am back to using the software.  I assume (and have read) that OneNote 2016 will stop being supported and know that eventually that version will not be an option.

No, two weeks ago they made a U-turn and revived OneNote 2016:
