Slow Right Click Response in Excel 2016

Recently, Excel 2016 has developed a really slow right click response. The odd thing is that it only happens when I right click the blank row directly beneath data. If I right click a random cell further down the sheet the right click menu pops up instantly though. Any thoughts on why this is happening?

For added context, this is a really simple workbook. No formulas, pivot tables or anything, just a single sheet containing 5 columns filled with text and numbers. Beyond that, there isn't even 2000 rows of data in the sheet, so I know this isn't an issue tied to file size.

    Hi. RealPegasus6802

I'm Robert, an Independent Advisor trying to help.

In that case, first, the error with the right click is only for that Excel file or in that specific workbook, or you have also noticed that same behavior in Word or in other functions that merits making use of the right mouse click.

If we are affected by this problem, all we have to do is modify a small parameter in the Windows registry. To do this, what we will do is execute the «Regedit» command from Cortana or the «Run» window of our Windows 10 (Win + R keyboard shortcut) and we move to the following path:

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \ Directory \ Background \ shellex \ ContextMenuHandlers

Under this folder (or Registration key) we can find other keys (other folders).

If we have an Intel graphics card, the two entries that we must remove are «igfxcui» and «igfxDTCM». If, on the other hand, we have an NVIDIA graphics card (as in the previous capture), the entry that we must delete is the one called «NvCplDesktopContext».

Once deleted the corresponding registry folders according to our graphics card, we only have to restart the computer and that's it. When you turn it on again we will see that the Windows context menu opens instantly when we right-click anywhere.

    Regards,

    Robert.

Robert, I appreciate the help. Unfortunately, once I'm into the 16.0 subfolder there is only one folder within it and it's called Common. None of the Office applications are listed within the Common folder unfortunately.

    Hey Robert,

Thanks for trying to help. Unfortunately, this didn't fix the issue. After applying your fix Excel still behaves the same.

There is a short (1-2 second) delay when right clicking the row of cells just below where data already resides. This delay is also present when clicking cells where data is already entered. The menu pops up instantaneously when clicking anywhere else randomly in the sheet without data.

This issue is isolated to Excel exclusively so it has me thinking that perhaps the sheet got formatted in some odd format without my realization.

I appreciate it any additional insight you may have.

In that case, finally uninstall and reinstall the Excel program or, alternatively, the office, given that the reported alternatives did not work. Also given that it only happens with that file and not with other Excel files or books or another office application. That file may be damaged or damaged.

In that case, you can try to restore the Excel program without uninstalling and reinstalling.

Make sure Excel is closed. It should not be in operation if we want to restore it.

What we are going to do is modify the Windows registry and delete Excel customizations. When the program itself sees that they do not exist, it will create them again with the default values.

Modifying the registry is a simple, but delicate operation. If you delete something that is not you can spoil applications, or Windows itself. If some of these steps you do not understand and you are not clear, do not delete anything.

To access the registry, look for the Windows or Cortana search engine in the lower left corner of the Windows Desktop, and type REGEDIT. Registry Editor will open.

We must double click on the HKEY_USERS key, to expand the folders it contains. We will see several folders that start with S-1-5. We enter it, and double click on Software, Microsoft and Office. Here we will see several numbers that correspond to the versions of Office that we have intalled.

If you have several versions, enter the one you want to modify. As an example, we enter folder 16, because we are going to restore Excel 2016. Inside we will see an Excel folder. Here is another call called Options, which contains all the customizations and changes. We must right click on the Options folder and choose the Delete option, to delete it:

When you delete the folder, the next time we use Excel it will restore the default values, as if you had just restored Excel without reinstalling.
