I'm having trouble organizing the headings and titles in word 2016.

Hi, I have created a document that looks like the following one:

  1. Title

1.1. Heading 1

1.1.1. Heading 2

1.2. Heading 1

1.2.1. Heading 2

1.2.2. Heading 3

However, when I try to create a new title that would look like this:

  1. Title

so I could move on with my document in this way:

2.1. Heading 1

2.1.1. Heading 2

2.1.1. Heading 3

I am having trouble because my 2. Title stays in the 1.2.2. Heading 3. So whenever I use that little arrow that's right next to each title/heading and that allows me to open/close that heading or to preview it, my 2. Title stays in the 1.2.2. Heading. So I can only review it once I open it.

Hi

Step by step instructions for setting up your numbering can be found here:

This is a link to pages on one or more trusted Word MVP websites. Those pages contain accurate safe information that I think will help you.

This method may seem a bit of work but not using it for important work is asking for trouble. Once you have it set, you can save a template with it and use that template for new documents where you need good numbering that can survive editing.

You need your Title level as Heading 1, and going down from there.

I hope this information helps.
