OpenType font won't embed in Word, but it does in PowerPoint

I'm working on corporate templates using our own, custom-designed OpenType font. The font embeds fine in PowerPoint, but it doesn't in Word. I tried saving the template on a Mac and several PCs, and none are able to embed it.  Is this a known issue?

    Hi Greg,

We appreciate that you provided the simple file and font file for us. And thank you for your patience.

I have tested it according to the template file you provided, and I encountered the same situation as yours. However, if we used the font you provided and we cannot reproduce the same situation.

Given this situation, we want to give you the steps below and hope that will help you:

Open the Word application > Open > This PC > Documents > Custom Office Templates > Open the template provided to us > Click on down arrow beside the bullets in Paragraph > Define New Bullet > Click on Font > Change the Font to British Council and other settings based on his requirement > OK > OK> Save the template, then you can create a new document based on this template and check if the font for bullets are embed.

If the problem persists, I want to confirm the information below with you:

    1. You can create a new document to check if the same problem will occur.
    2. We also want to check the behavior in same environment, could you provide the Product Information and version of Word? You can go to Word > File > Account and provide the screenshot of it.
    3. At the same time, you mentioned “British Council Sans Headline does not embed at all even though it embeds find in PowerPoint”, since we cannot reproduce the same situation as yours, so we want to collect the video with you to check the difference between them.
    4. May I know how you shared the files with the other users? For example, via OneDrive or place the document in Network drive?

    Best Regards,

    Sukie

    Hi Sukie,

Thank you for your help. Please could you let me know roughly how long this could take? Would it be days, a week or few weeks? I need to finish the templates by the end of October so it would be much appreciated if you could give me an idea of timings in case I need to start working on plan B and then re-do them in the future once embedding works again.

    Many thanks

    Greg

    Hi Sukie,

We have now tested an off-the-shelf OpenType font but embedding still doesn't work.

We have also contacted our custom font designer and they advised it must be an issue with Word.

We've now tested this on our internal PCs and Mac as well as external Mac, but OpenType fonts don't seem to embed.

Interestingly, I've noticed that the font seems to work as body copy, but when we set the style to bullet points, it doesn't work. Please check the template I supplied in private message and you will notice that the styles for body copy and bullet points both use the same custom font yet body copy displays fine and bullets don't.

If you could please respond by the end of this week, it would be much appreciated.

    Many thanks

    Greg

    Hi Greg,

Thank you for your message in this forum.

According to your description, it seems that you are using a custom-designed OpenType font and you embed the font to word on several computers and it also didn’t work.

May I know if the scenario above is consistent with yours? If so, I have just tested it, I downloaded AngelicWar.otf, then I installed it and embed it into Word, and I didn’t encounter the same situation as yours.

Given this situation, we’d suggest you embed some general .otf font to check if the same problem will occur.

At the same time, if it is convenient to you, I want to collect the font with you via private message to test it on our side. Please click on the link below to access your private message: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/privatemessage/inbox.

    Best Regards,

    Sukie
