Why Word support for opentype features is garbage ?

Inside Word 2016 I can activate some of opentype features, but I should always activate manually the default ones that come with the font like standard/contextual ligatures, proportional figures, this is really tiring for me. The second problem is that some of the important features like ordinal, fraction, swash, slashed zero, capital spacing... are not available !

The irony is that LibreOffice, free and open source tool, have all those features available and working ! and the default opentype features are activated by default ! how can a product that you pay money for not having some of the basic features for typography ?

I tried to play with those list of numbered and unknown stylistic sets that Word display but none of them works !

Really ! is this kind of helping that microsoft gives to customers, we are tired of those reinstall/repair/safe/with-without addons replies ! is there no technical one who understand my question, I even put those pictures (from LibreOffice) to show what I want to do in Word because first I don't found those damn features in Word opentype options window.

This is one of the laziest and non technical forum on internet !

You know Word is the only software that keeps me using that damn spying and slow windows 10, because I have many files written with old Word versions, I'm now linux guy but with this kind of reply for me even Word starts to fell behind (in terms of options and typography capabilities) open source and free apps !

Hi, sorry for not replying quickly, the first annoying problem with Word is that all default opentype features (enabled by default inside otf files like ligatures) are disabled by default and I should every-time enable them one by one, but on LibreOffice most of default opentype features are enabled by default and start working as soon as I start typing some text.

The other problem is that Word is not able to show all available opentype features in some fonts,

for example how can I access the following features inside Word 2016 ?

With EB-Garamond how can I access these features : Ordinal, swash, true (not the one generated by Word) small and petite capitals ?

With Scheherazade font how can I access to these basic features ?

With Gentium font how can use also these features ?

Even slashed zero and otf automatic Capital Spacing is not available

In Word, you can add OpenType features to the style you are using. This works the same as setting other font attributes (such as bold or italic) in a style. Not all fonts may support the OpenType features, though.

Note that comparing Microsoft Word with LibreOffice Writer won't help. These are two different programs.

You can post feedback for Microsoft in the Uservoice forum at https://word.uservoice.com if you wish. Suggestions may be incorporated into future versions of Word.

    Hello Happy Dreamer,

I tried to replicate your concern, and using the OpenType features worked on my end.

For us to be able to isolate the cause of your concern, kindly provide the following information:

    • When did the issue first occur?
    • Have you made any recent changes before you encounter the issue?
    • Have you tried to create a new Word document and see the same behavior?

In the meantime, I suggest that you check if the same issue will occur when the Word app is launch in safe mode. You may also disable active add-ins one at a time to see if one of those caused the issue. See this link for the steps that you need to perform.

Running Office repair will also help us isolate the issue, as it will run a diagnostic tool that mostly resolved Office apps performance issues. Make sure that you have the latest updates for Office apps.

Kindly provide a video of how you try to use the OpenType feature. This will also help us get a better view of the exact performance of the Word app when using the said features. See this link to know the steps on how you can share us the file.

I am looking forward to your response.
