External Data Connection XML File Location

I am working with an Excel file which connects to a SharePoint site to retrieve data. Lately, I have been getting an XML parse error when refreshing the data in the workbook because a Document Type Definition is prohibited.

Where does Excel store the XML file between the time I import the data from the external connection and the time I refresh the data in the workbook? This would allow me to open the open the XML file separately with a text editor to fix it. I would then be able to import the data to my workbook directly from the XML file.

Thanks,

Antoine

    Hi Antoine,

    Thanks for your update.

Have you tried connecting the SharePoint site data in a different workbook and then refresh data to see if issue happens?

If issue happens is different workbooks, I recommend you try Online Repair Office with the steps in this articleand check if this issue can be fixed.

In addition, could you please share with us a screenshot of Product Information as requested in the original reply? Appreciate your time and effort.

    Best regards,

    Tina

    Hi Antoine,

Thank you for sharing the experience with us.

As far as I know, I'm afraid it's not easy to find the location for that XML file between the time you import the data from the external connection and the time you refresh the data in the workbook because the process may be encrypted in the background.

If you still want to find it, I recommend you post this question in TechNet forum where members have more experience about this kind of question and see if it would be possible to achieve your requirement. Your understanding is appreciated.

In the meantime, I would like to help troubleshooting the issue about getting the XML parse error when you refresh the data in the workbook.

Could you please share following information?

1.Does this issue only happen when you connect to the SharePoint site in a specific workbook?

2.Screenshot for the XML parse error.

3.What is the current version and channel of your Office? Please capture a full screenshot of Product Information via File>Account.

    Best regards,

    Tina
