Word 365 is VERY slow and laggy to save a document

When I save a document with a new name, it takes 20 seconds or more.

I'm saving to my local hard drive.

I'm running OneDrive in the background. So, I save to the local hard drive. Then OneDrive syncs with the cloud and with my other computers.

I have a brand new fast i7 with SSD for the programs and RAID 4TB pair for the data, Windows 10 Pro, 64bit.

It's a problem with OneDrive integration, I'm pretty sure. How do I get OneDrive out of this process so I can just save quickly and directly to my local HDD?

Hi,

I had the same problem - saving anything in the OneDrive folder took forever. This is what solved it for me:

  1. Right-click on the OneDrive icon on the bottom right of the screen. It might be hidden. It looks like a couple of clouds
  2. Click on "settings"
  3. Click on "Office"
  4. Un-check "Use office applications to sync office files that I open"

 Hope that works for you.

If you choose not to save your documents to the local OneDrive folder, no synchronization to the OneDrive cloud will occur.

If you want to avoid OneDrive completely, change the settings for the locally installed OneDrive app so that it doesn't synchronize and so that it does not start when Windows start.

Also, in Word, at File > Options > Save, select the option to "Save to Computer by default" and clear the option that says "Show additional places for saving, even if sign in may be required."

You may also want to sign in to Windows with a local user account. Do not make use of a Microsoft account.

It would be worth testing if the performance improves if you minimize the impact of the OneDrive app.

Note that you can try what I suggested and still make use of OneDrive for specific documents. For example, you can open documents directly from the OneDrive site in Word (with "real-time" editing, no synchronizing).

I already have "Save to Computer by default" checked, and "Show additional places for saving..." unchecked.

I don't want to avoid OneDrive completely. I use it. I want to save to my local hard drive, to a folder that's synced with OneDrive. Then when OneDrive syncs, it syncs the file. All 3 of my other computers work this way. It's fast.

But in this case, OneDrive is somehow getting involved in the saving process, I think. I don't want that.

    It's word Version 1902 (Build 11328.20368 Click-to-Run). Office 365.

It takes 20-40 seconds to save a Word doc with a new name. Same with Excel. Saving to my local hard drive.

I just bought a brand new fast i7 with SSD computer. I remember having this problem with my old computer, but it was a couple years ago so I don't remember how we solved it.

OneDrive is somehow getting in the way of just saving to my local hard drive.
