Uploading files containing special characters in the name

Hi, I'm trying to backup my work desktop using OneDrive because I'm transferring to a new computer. I've received an error that says I'm not allowed to upload files with certain characters in the file name. The file naming convention my company uses is 99999-Month-Client-JobName.ext so nearly every file I have contains hyphens.

How can I upload these files without renaming everything.

    Hi Ethan Prus,

Thanks for come back to me.

After more test and search, I can upload file with hyphens in its name without any problem.

Could you try to upload a test file and check if it works on your side.

Characters that aren't allowed in file and folder names  in OneDrive, OneDrive for Business on Office 365, and SharePoint Online are:

     " * : < > ? / \ |

Because those characters will confused OneDrive to recognize file type so that prevent files and folders from syncing.

    Regards,

    Eric

Sorry I didn't mention this, but I'm on a Mac, so those solutions won't work.

Out of curiosity, why can't OneDesign handle special characters?

    Hi Ethan Prus,

    I'm willing to help you.

Unfortunately, We are not able to upload the files with a invalid file name, which is the restiction by design.

One solution is to batch remove hyphens from file name or batch rename files

I find some threads for your reference.

    1.  Batch removal of hyphens form file name.

    1. 4 ways to batch rename files in Windows 10.
